TECHNIQUES OF MEDITATION - THE FOUR PEARLS OF WISDOM
FEBRUARY 14 - 15, 2015
with Jessica Scult Magnin
Picture
The Four Pearls of Wisdom are the Brahma Viharas, considered by Buddhism to be the four highest emotions. The word brahma literally means ‘highest’ or ‘superior.’ Vihara means ‘to dwell’ or ‘to live’. The Brahma Viharas are thus the basic emotions that one ‘lives in’ and ‘lives by’ throughout ones life. They are: 1) loving-kindness, 2) compassion, 3) sympathetic joy, and 4) equanimity. The Brahma Viharas can be understood as four basic ways we can/should relate to others around us. For example, we may relate to friendly people with love, to those in distress with compassion, to successful people with sympathy and to unpleasant people with equanimity. The purpose of this Mediation Weekend is to encourage and nurture these four Brahma Viharas within us.
